At the recent SUP-X, The Startup Expo held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, I had the opportunity to give an open workshop session on “Tips for Better Branding your Startup.” With the proliferation of new domain extensions, many of them words with meaning, like .CLUB, .SHOP, .WORK, etc., it is no longer a good idea to drop vowels, misspell, or make up words just so you can get a particular domain name extension. Instead, you’d be better served to find a great domain name, spelled correctly, that matches your business and ideally uses an extension that adds some meaning as well.
SUP-X is not a domain industry event. As “the startup expo,” the one-day event packs in a wide variety of entrepreneurs and startups from all over the country, gathered for a day of networking and learning, capped off by a high-profile pitchfest with a very generous $25,000 cash prize (won this year by the smart “accounting as a service” platform, Xendoo). As a startup focused event, SUP-X was a great show to share some practical branding advice around choosing the right name and domain name for your business, and the workshop presentation was very well-received, with some good questions asked by the audience. To bring some real-world examples to life, I presented them in a fun and interactive game show format, similar to what I hosted at Namescon Europe.
Now that the SUP-X attendees were introduced to the value and benefits of strong, brandable, keyword domains, it made sense to also introduce them to the Names.club premium domain marketplace, where names from many new extensions (.CLUB, .SHOP, .MIAMI, .BOSTON, .FITNESS, WORK, .WEDDING and more) are available for low monthly payments over 60-months.
